چکیده

An immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody capture enzyme immunoassay (MAC-EIA) was developed for the rapid and early diagnosis of LaCrosse (LAC) virus infections. The MAC-EIA was a sensitive and specific technique for the detection of IgM antibodies to LAC virus in cerebrospinal fluid specimens and in acute-phase serum specimens. In a retrospective study, cerebrospinal fluid and acute-phase serum paired samples from 108 patients were tested by the MAC-EIA and by an IgM immunofluorescence assay. The results were compared with the original diagnosis, which was made by using a variety of classical serological tests including serum neutralization, hemagglutination inhibition, and complement fixation. Thirty patients were confirmed as having LAC virus infections; of these, 30 (100%) were diagnosed as positive by serum MAC-EIA, and 27 (90%) were positive by cerebrospinal fluid MAC-EIA. The MAC-EIA was more sensitive than the IgM immunofluorescence assay. Two patients who were not previously confirmed as positive cases were diagnosed as having LAC virus infections by the MAC-EIA. One patient who was subsequently diagnosed as having a Jamestown Canyon virus infection and two patients who were previously infected with Jamestown Canyon virus were not falsely identified as having LAC virus infections by the MAC-EIA.

Comparison of two different enzyme immunoassays for detection of immunoglobulin M antibodies against tick-borne encephalitis virus in serum and cerebrospinal fluid.

Two enzyme immunoassays for the detection in immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against tick-borne encephalitis virus were compared, employing a solid phase coated either with antigen or with mu-chain-specific antiserum to human IgM. The latter IgM-capturing assay system proved to be more sensitive, and its superiority was especially prominent when high titers of tick-borne encephalitis virus-sp...

Detection of Herpes Simplex Virus Infection in Cerebrospinal Fluid

ABSTRACT        Background and Objective: Herpes simplex encephalitis is a life-threatening consequence of the central nervous system (CNS) infection with Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Although it is a rare disease, mortality rates reach 70% in the absence of therapy and only a minority of individuals can return to normal function. The aim of this study was to d...

DETECTION OF HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE TYPE B IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID OF SUSPECTED CHILDREN WITH MENINGITIS BYPCR

ABSTRACT Background: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with primers from "hpd" gene was compared with culture for the detection of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in CSF samples from children suspected of meningitis. Methods: 300 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from suspected meningitis cases were studied by culture (Leventhal & Chocolate Agar) and PCR. Results: The latter...

Identification of Neisseria Meningitidis in Patients with Suspected Meningitis: a Study in Imam Reza Hospital, Kermanshah City, Iran, 2013

Background & Aims: Neisseria meningitidis is bacteria fastidious, and the main causes of meningitis and acute sepsis. Appropriate treatment depends on accurate and timely diagnosis. This study aimed to identify Neisseria meningitidis infection in samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in patients with suspected meningitis. Methods: In this study, 198 samples of cerebrospinal fluid of patients wit...

Polymerase chain reaction for detection of herpes simplex virus encephalitis.

A patient with herpes simplex virus encephalitis is described. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to confirm the diagnosis in cerebrospinal fluid. PCR allows the rapid diagnosis of many infectious organisms, such as HSV, in which prompt diagnosis is essential.
